With its brilliant new Boxpark, a tech industry to rival Silicon Roundabout and a Westfield on its way, this much-maligned south London suburb has enjoyed a bit of a renaissance in recent years. Cutting through Croydon town centre, Church Street is home to an old-school collection of grocery stores, high street chains and independent businesses. THE CROWD

Home to Lidl, Argos, Primark and Poundland, Church Street is where locals come to shop on a budget. However independent names such as comic shop A Place in Space have a loyal following, too. Church Street isn’t a major evening destination, but Romanian restaurant Mahala can get quite busy on Friday and Saturday nights. East Croydon station is a seven-minute walk, and there’s a tram stop opposite the shop.
